Identifying Competencies for Development
Embarking on the journey as a student in the Health Systems Science program, I acknowledge the pivotal role my research plays in contributing to the improvement of the South African health system. Through the lens of the Johari Window, which reveals aspects of self-awareness, and a reflection on my research role, I have identified several competencies that align with my current strengths and goals, while also acknowledging areas for improvement.
Identified Competencies:
1. Communication and Voice Amplification:
Despite possessing a strong foundation in critical thinking and planning, there is room for improvement in my ability to vocalize my thoughts assertively about topics I am deeply invested in. Developing this competency will enhance my ability to communicate effectively, ensuring that my voice is heard and acknowledged.
2. Writing and Presentation Skills:
While I excel in critical thinking and planning, refining my academic writing and presentation skills is crucial. Strengthening these competencies will aid in effectively conveying my understanding of literature, ideas, and research findings, contributing to the development of a genuine researcher identity.
3. Overcoming Imposter Syndrome:
Acknowledging the presence of imposter syndrome in my Hidden Area, it is imperative to address and overcome these feelings of uncertainty and incompetency. Building confidence in my abilities as a researcher will foster a more authentic researcher identity.
4. Community Participation and Identity Development:
To develop a genuine researcher identity, I need to actively participate in research communities, engaging in genuine activities that progress from peripheral to significant. This approach aligns with the principle of legitimate peripheral participation and will contribute to a more integrated understanding of research language, norms, and values.
5. Translation of Complex Research Findings:
Strengthening my ability to translate intricate research findings into accessible language will enhance my effectiveness as a scholar-practitioner. This competency aligns with the goal of leveraging research experiences to address real-world health challenges.
