Session 3

Research Paradigms

In the previous session, we spoke about the new lenses through which we should approach research and that the aim of health systems research should be moving away from focusing on profit to creating value for all stakeholders in the health system and that we should use more human-centered lenses to think about which problems to study. However, this still does not touch on what to study or how we study it. This session will speak to the first things we need to consider when looking at what to study, and how.

We start off by looking at different types of research and their purpose. We then speak to research as a scientific process of inquiry and the philosophy of science. We then introduce you to research paradigms and the different types of research paradigms used in qualitative and quantitative research. The session further focuses on the specific research paradigms related to Health Systems research.
